Cannabinoids are a class of chemical compounds found in the cannabis plant (Cannabis sativa). They interact with the endocannabinoid system in both humans and many animals, playing a crucial role in regulating various physiological processes. The most well-known cannabinoid is delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), which is responsible for the psychoactive effects of cannabis.

There are over 100 different cannabinoids identified in cannabis, each with its own properties and potential effects

The endocannabinoid system (ECS) is a complex cell-signaling system found in the bodies of humans and many animals. It plays a crucial role in regulating various physiological processes and maintaining homeostasis, which is the body’s ability to maintain a stable internal environment despite external fluctuations.

The ECS gets its name from cannabinoids, which are compounds found in both the cannabis plant (phytocannabinoids) and the human body (endocannabinoids).

The entourage effect is a concept in the field of cannabis and cannabinoid research that suggests that the various compounds found in the cannabis plant, including cannabinoids, terpenes, and other phytochemicals, work together synergistically to produce a more significant and beneficial effect when used together than when isolated and used individually.

In essence, it proposes that the whole plant extract, containing a range of compounds, may have greater therapeutic potential than isolated cannabinoids like THC or CBD alone.

The legality of CBD (cannabidiol) varies by country and region and can be influenced by a variety of factors, including the source of the CBD (hemp or marijuana), the THC content of the product, and local regulations. Here’s a general overview:

  1. United States: In the United States, the legality of CBD is complex and can vary at both the federal and state levels. Under federal law, CBD derived from hemp with a THC content of 0.3% or less is legal thanks to the passage of the 2018 Farm Bill. However, individual states may have their own regulations, and some have more restrictive rules.
  2. Canada: In Canada, both CBD derived from hemp and CBD derived from marijuana are legal. Canada legalized recreational cannabis in 2018, making all cannabis-derived products legal for adult use.
  3. European Union: In the European Union (EU), the legality of CBD varies from country to country. Generally, CBD products derived from hemp with a THC content of 0.2% or less are legal in most EU countries, but regulations can vary. Some countries may have stricter rules or require special permits.
  4. Other Countries: CBD’s legal status varies widely around the world. Some countries have legalized it for medical or recreational use, while others have strict prohibitions. It’s essential to research the specific laws and regulations in your country or region.
  5. Over-the-Counter CBD Products: In some places, CBD products with low THC content are available over the counter in health stores, pharmacies, or online. These products are often marketed as dietary supplements, skincare items, or wellness products.

CBD is generally safe, non-toxic, and has no known lethal dose. In a comprehensive review published in 2017, the World Health Organization (WHO) found that daily doses of up to 1500 mg of CBD are well tolerated by humans. According to the National Cancer Institute, cannabinoid receptors are absent in the brainstem, meaning cannabinoid compounds do not affect respiration. The brainstem controls vital functions like breathing, which is why medications such as opioids that interact with brainstem receptors can be lethal.
